Applications and Deadline
Applications
Admission is granted by the Graduate School, upon recommendation by the program in either Comparative Literature or Comparative Studies in Discourse and Society. For this reason you must send materials as indicated to the Graduate School and to the program before your application can be considered.
The following materials should be submitted to the Graduate School Admissions Office, 309 Johnston Hall, University of Minnesota, 101 Pleasant Street S.E., Minneapolis, MN 55455-0421; 612.625.3014; e-mail inquiries to gsadmit@tc.umn.edu; information is available from or the Graduate School website.
- Completed application for admission. Applications must be done online at http://www.grad.umn.edu/prospective_students/apply_online.html
- Application fee ($75 for US citizens and permanent residents; $95 for others).
- A copy of your statement of background and purpose, ordinarily the same as that sent to the admissions committee.
- Official transcripts from all previous colleges or universities attended.
- A listing of all courses you expect to complete as part of the program in which you are presently enrolled, if any. The list should include department, course number, a descriptive title, and number of credits for each course.
- For applicants whose native language is not English, official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The University of Minnesota's institutional code for reporting TOEFL scores is 6874. For information about this examination, write to TOEFL, Box 899, Princeton, NJ, U.S.A 08541; or visit their website, TOEFL Online.

- Letters of recommendation from three people who can judge your academic performance and your promise as a graduate student. Note there are no forms for the letters of recommendation, and they must be sent by the recommenders (or an official placement service), not by the applicant.
- Official scores from the general tests of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Scores from a GRE taken within the last five years are required. To report GRE scores, please enter the University of Minnesota institutional code, 6874, and indicate EITHER
- category 2902 "Comparative Language and Literature" (for Comparative Literature) OR
- category 2999 “Humanities and Arts—Other” (for Comparative Studies in Discourse and Society)
from the Department Code List in the GRE Information Bulletin on your Registration Form if you are registering to take the exam for the first time, or on the Additional Score Report Request Form if you already have taken the GRE. - A statement of background and purpose, including specific areas and subfields of interest.
- A copy of one or more papers that in your view best represent your interests and work.
- A statement of your language skills and experience.
- The financial aid application form if you wish to be considered for a fellowship or a teaching assistantship. The form is available in pdf format here, or you may request one
Deadlines
Admissions application
Application materials must be received by December 12, 2009. Applications for admission are considered once a year, only at this deadline. Please note, however, that this deadline applies to application materials only; letters of recommendation and transcripts can arrive late. Decisions are usually known by mid-February.
